Luxury Luggage Brand Rimowa Pops Up in Aspen for the Winter

Tis the season for airports and plane tickets, but as any seasoned traveler knows it isn’t only about the destination or the flights, it’s also about the packing—specifically, the suitcase. Being a chic, well-heeled traveler is practically a requirement given the social media-driven age we live in, and now Aspenites will have an easier time attaining this esteemed status thanks to the opening of the Rimowa pop-up on Hyman Avenue this winter. Taking inspiration from airplanes, Rimowa has been creating luggage since 1898, pioneering along the way by introducing aluminum into the suitcase industry, as well as polycarbonate. Today, a structured, grooved Rimowa suitcase is a travel status symbol.

Open through April, the store furthers the German company’s expansion in the U.S., finding a temporary home in the very mountains where chic travelers have long ventured. "This season, we're excited to open our first pop-up in Aspen, a perennially favored destination of discerning travelers,” says Hector Muelas, chief brand officer of Rimowa. “The store offers alpine visitors our entire product line in a space geared toward winter travel and lifestyle.”

The Aspen boutique stocks the brand’s latest collections—from carryon styles to check-in sizes. It also sells the new Trunk S, an iconic shape that pays homage to vintage travel trunks. This new version of the Rimowa trunk is rendered in a smaller size, making it an easier travel companion. And exclusive to the Rimowa mountain location will be two must-have items: a custom Aspen luggage tag and a limited-edition Aspen sticker.

To celebrate the store’s arrival, the LVMH brand will—naturally—host an apr├Ęs party on Dec. 29. Skiers and boarders can head straight from the mountain to the bright and spacious store to enjoy bites by Matsuhisa, libations, and tunes care of DJ Mayfly from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Making the event and the pop-up even more special, the Instagram-favorite, LA-based coffee-and-tea company Alfred will be serving a specialty hot toddie at the party. The event kicks off Alfred’s own mini pop-up within the Rimowa space where they will be serving complimentary hot chocolate, coffee and matcha through mid-January. Now, the only thing left to do is figure out the next location to head to, Rimowa in hand. 601 Hyman Ave.
