STEADY SNAPPING, STEERING wheel drumming and embarrassingly confident vocals take over when Hall & Oates comes on the radio. The compelling sound of an acoustic guitar mixed with memorable lyrics begs listeners to sing along—“Rich Girl” being one of those timeless tunes. Providing countless karaoke favorites and era anthems, Daryl Hall and John Oates have produced 29 Billboard Top 40 hits and are considered to be the most successful pop duo in the world—made official by their 2014 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Signed to Atlantic Records in the 1970s, Hall & Oates sold more albums than any other duo in music history. This marks the 50th year that the two music legends have performed together, and they are touring again, playing to a hometown crowd when they headline Jazz Aspen Snowmass’ Labor Day Experience.
According to Forbes, the No. 1 thing that successful people do every day is keep a journal and record their personal wins. The article explains the importance of acknowledging what makes oneself great and taking a brief moment each day for gratitude and self-congratulations. Oates’ success is no surprise when discovering that he kept a series of journals for 10 years. Like many, Oates had no idea what he was going to do after graduating from college. He wisely chose to start documenting his life—beginning the day he left college and ending sometime during the chaotic year of 1980. These journals recently resurfaced, and after reviewing them with his friend and co-writer, Chris Epting, they both decided it was time for Oates to write a book. “I documented pretty much everything I did for 10 years in these handwritten journals. I figured it was time to share my stories with the world,” he says.
