Longtime locally owned businesses keep the true spirit of Aspen alive. Here, we offer our inside guide.
POPPYCOCK’S CAFÉ
Founded in 1971 and named, they say, aft er being a go-to place for a bit of gossip, Poppy’s has been a must-stop ever since. Served all day, housemade breakfast favorites include signature old-fashioned oatmeal-buttermilk pancakes (you can buy a bag of its unique mix to go), breakfast burritos, corned beef hash, three-egg omelets, waffles and more. 665 E. Cooper Ave., 970.925.1245, poppycocksaspen.com
KEMO SABE
“Pairing swagg er with confidence” has been the motto at Kemo Sabe since owner Tom Yoder’s love affair with Stetson inspired him to open his flagship shop 30 years ago. In addition to said Stetsons, which are custom fitted and banded, the shop is the place for Western boots, bags, jackets, and fine and vintage jewelry. Book the 1880s Western VIP bar upstairs for private events. 434 Cooper Ave., 970.925.7878, kemosabe.com
CARL’S PHARMACY
Sooner or later, everyone spending time in town will pass through the doors of Carl’s Pharmacy at the corner of Main and Monarch (spot the red and white vintage sign out front, and you’re there). From a bottle of Dom to a bottle of Advil, an Aspen Times to a New York Times, party favors to perfume, if you need it, Carl’s carries it. Th at it does is a testament to the dedication of Carl and Katie Bergman, who’ve owned the place since 1965, when horses still roamed into town. 306 E. Main St., 970.925.3273, carlspharmacy.com
WHEELER OPERA HOUSE
An entertainment palace by any standard, the Wheeler, as it’s known, has stood grandly at the corner of Hyman and Mill since 1899. Several refurbishments—from its sandstone exterior to the orchestra seating to the live concerts, films, operas and other events on the stage—serve as a reminder that some things get even better with age. 320 E.
