Jennifer Tidwell creates a luxurious Snowmass retreat for a California couple.
For an entrepreneurial couple based in Newport Beach, laying down roots in a slopeside, ski-in, skiout setting in Snowmass Base Village was the joyful culmination of a long relationship with the area. “We were engaged in Aspen 25 years ago,” shares the husband. “Eventually, we fell in love with Snowmass for the beautiful surroundings, walkability to the village, accessibility to the airport, and the food and wine scene.“
A desire to deepen their connection to the area led to purchasing a four-bedroom, 4,000-square-foot home in the development. With the infrastructure already in place, the couple sought to make the space their own, infusing their tastes and personalities into the project with customized finishes, furnishings, and artwork.
That creative challenge fell to Jennifer Tidwell, principal designer and co-owner of The Workroom Interiors in Mill Valley, California, who, interestingly enough, was introduced to the clients by her mother. “Mom was an interior designer for 30 years,” Tidwell shares. “She worked closely with the owners, who became good friends. Now she’s more of a design liaison to them and meeting with architects and designers for owners of other properties as well.”
Sharing information about her daughter’s design and interior work (Tidwell is also a partner in The Workroom Shoppe, which specializes in home furnishings, artwork and décor) with the clients, the duo teamed up. “My mom was a liaison,” explains Tidwell. “I’d present textiles and materials to her, and then we would fine-tune them and fly up to Colorado for final presentations with the owners.”
It worked like a charm. As a result, the tri-level home became a haven. “It was interesting because the construction was just finished, the infrastructure of the space was already there, things like the kitchen counters, for instance,” recalls Jennifer. “We pulled up the protective paper and installed the furniture, finishes, lighting and so forth.”
Reflecting on the project, infused with a neutral palette and luxurious, cozy textiles, Tidwell shares that her favorite space to work with was the living room with its double- height ceiling and views of the surrounding mountains and ski slopes. She positioned a Lawson Fenning Mesa sofa there and sheared chairs around a textured teak root coffee table. She completed the space with a unique ceramic wall installation from Charabati Bizzarri in Mexico City. She paired a custom dining table with Thomas Hayes chairs in the adjoining dining room and suspended an Apparatus Studio chandelier overhead. “It was fun to infuse different artwork and textures into the space,” she notes.
A view through the 193 living areas shows dramatic mountain views.
Private areas were designed to offer varying experiences. The primary bedroom, for example, received an elegant four-poster oak bedframe with a shearling headboard and a Community Manufacturing bench. At the same time, a playful bunk room was outfitted with bunk beds custom-designed by Jennifer and vintage corduroy chairs.
Noting the installation took six months from start to finish, Jennifer shares, “It’s always a little bit challenging to design from afar, and the altitude was a killer. But we had all the floor plans and could easily design spaces, visiting the house during construction. We did a single-day install of all the furniture. The clients had so much fun and let us lead the design. It was well-executed, and everything turned out solid and fit.”
The home is positioned conveniently on a Snowmass Base Area ski slope.
