The Van Andel Institute, the Michigan-based nonprofit that sponsors cutting-edge biomedical research and science education, held its first Aspen fundraiser at the McLain Flats home of Susan and Lloyd Miller June 21.

The Millers’ stunning residence provided the ideal setting for an informative and intimate cocktail party. Guests mingled over wine from John Anthony Vineyards while enjoying bites of elk carpaccio, prosciutto-wrapped watermelon and oysters. Collins, VAI’s vice president of development, and Sempere, one of the institute’s lead investigators of cancer and cell biology, spoke about the big strides the organization is making in research related to cancer, Parkinson’s, heart disease and more. –Photos by Hal Williams
