Explore this rugged Western town with lots of hot amenities.

Historically known for its steaming hot springs, Glenwood Springs has long been a haven for the health-seeker. With the arrival of railroads in 1887, trainloads of tourists flocked to bask in the small mountain town’s offerings, including the Vapor Caves, Fairy Caves, Hotel Colorado and, of course, the abundance of hot springs spots.

Now, the family-friendly town of 9,000-plus has expanded in its offerings, from outdoor activities—river sports, fishing, hiking, aerial adventures, biking, climbing, off-roading and snow sports—to shopping and dining. Head to CO Ranch House for brunch and pair its decadent elk cheddar sausage links with a DIY bloody mary. For dinner, The Pullman serves a diverse, locally sourced and creatively curated menu. (We recommend the roast Rocky Mountain trout or the peach BBQ Berkshire pork shoulder, with a side of smoked potatoes.)

GlenwoodSprings.jpgGlenwood Springs is the largest city in the Roaring Fork Valley.

The area is also home to an extraordinary example of travertine geological formation on the popular Hanging Lake trail. The 1.2-mile hike is steep, at over 1,000 vertical feet, and rigorous, but worth the trek, where sparkling turquoise waterfalls and cool mountain air awaits you. It’s such a hot spot that reservations are required year-round, and a shuttle service is available during peak summer months to access the trail.

Posthike, descend into the Yampah Spa Vapor Caves, a natural underground hot mineral water steam bath, for relaxation and rejuvenation as you inhale the natural steam vapor in the warm, dimly lit cave chambers.

Rafting on the Colorado River through the stunning Glenwood Canyon is a must as well (guided tours available at, and a gondola ride up to the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park will take you into the wild, Wild West. Experience all the thrill rides—including the haunted mine drop, alpine coaster and giant canyon swing—at new heights at this mountain-perched, Western-themed amusement park. Glenwood may have been known as a respite, but, today, adventure awaits.
